Is It Really Worth it to Always Be Accessible? How About Not Accessible?

by Christopher D. Anderson on June 22, 2010

Technology has come leaps and bounds over the last few years. There is something to make everything you can think of more convenient and some things you may not have thought of.

Being accessible is important for marketing as well. And, again, with today’s technology, you can be accessible all the time. If someone needs you or has a question all they have to do is send you a message or a tweet and you are right on it.

Instant gratification.

It doesn’t matter if you are away from the computer, you can get updates with your cell phone. Now you can be accessible all day, every day. Isn’t that wonderful? Won’t you make an impact if you are right on the button like that? Instantly gratifying your customer or followers needs.

But, is it really worth it to be that accessible? Is it that healthy to be plugged in like that constantly? I have often wondered if being plugged in all the time causes people to forget about human, face to face interaction, but that’s a different story.

Obviously that’s not the case most of the time but you have to wonder if it really is worth it to be so accessible. We all need breaks and it seems like that’s easy to forget. I’ve already been over the benefits of unplugging every once in awhile as have many others.

It’s good for you and your business to not be accessible all the time. Most of the time will do.

But then I got to thinking. What if there was a way to take advantage of this ideal? As time progresses, people are becoming “plugged in” more and more. More people are becoming more accessible every day.

But what if you could figure out a way to raise your own perceived value by not being accessible? As the convenience of technology evolved you were one step ahead of the pack for awhile if you could always be reached. But now it’s possible for anyone to do that. So you don’t stand out as much.

The advance of cell phones and laptops has made it easy to always be there when you’re needed. We have control of our time and our own accessibility. It’s possible to be online all the time. But what if we could use that to our advantage?

Our time is valuable so you can only reach us directly at certain times.

Would that make you stand out from everyone else that’s plugged in? It could make you look worse I suppose but if you play around with the idea of perceived value (which btw can make a huge difference) it could change things a bit.

What do you think? Could the fact that everyone else is always available be used to our advantage? By not always being available?

Throw your ideas out there. Can you take this possibility a little further? Do you think it can be used like this?
