Scribe SEO Review

by Christopher D. Anderson on February 24, 2010

I have recently been trying out the new Scribe SEO by Brian Clark of Copyblogger. I’ve had a chance to try it out on a few of my posts, both present and past posts. Here are my thoughts on Scribe SEO.

Search engine optimization is a big thing around the online marketing world. If you write something that is optimized for SEO, you can bring in a lot of natural traffic from search engines. There is also big debate on writing for the SEO and writing for readers. The readability can suffer if you overstuff your article with keywords. While writing too much for the readers doesn’t optimize your article for SEO. It’s always seems like it’s one way or the other.

I always thought it would be nice to find a middle ground. Make it readable and SEO freindly. Frankly I’m not good with optimizing for SEO. At least not on my blog. I tend to write in a natural voice and while I do repeat things I’m not going to stuff my “conversation” with repeats of the same word (or maybe I do…). Don’t get me wrong, Google does like some of my articles. I have a few that are pulling in some natural traffic. Just not as much as I would like.

So, here I am trying to figure out how to optimize my articles so that they can be good for both SEO and my readers. That’s when I came across this awesome software. As I said, I’m still learning the tricks of search optimization and this particular software showed me that I was right, I’m not very good at optimizing my blog for SEO at all. But that’s also a good thing.

The cool thing that makes Scribe SEO stand out from other search engine optimization tools is that it works with what you have already written. Basically you write your blog and then use this tool to optimize it for SEO. That way it is still readable and it makes the search engines happy. Who can argue with that?

Here’s How It Works

Scribe SEO is actually a plugin for wordpress. The only requirements are to have the following themes: Thesis (great theme for seo btw), Headway, or Hybrid. Or you can also use the The All In One SEO plugin. The reason it needs one of these is because they provide custom fields for title tags and meta description.

Basically these are the two things that show up in the search results when someone does a search. Like this:

These themes and plugin will allow you to customize how your title and description will show up on the search engine. Scribe SEO uses this data to optimize your article. It then analyzes your article and tells you what you need to help the search engines like your content as well.

What That Means

Basically, what that means is that you can write out your article to please your readers. Afterwards you use Scribe SEO to analyze everything. It then presents to you what you can do to improve the SEO aspects of your article. Such as word count, link count, keywords, primary keywords, etc. It will even suggest ways to change your main keyword and give you data and suggestions for other keywords. It really is a powerful little piece of software.

Final Thoughts

This is exactly what I needed to help me get the idea of search engine optimization down without actually having someone stand here and show me. If I was writing purely for the idea of SEO I could do it. And I know I can write for my readers as that is my main focus anyways. But this little piece of software is what is going to help me find that middle line. And probably a lot of other people too. But not only is it going to help me but (this is key right here) it also helps me learn why it works and how it works.

This doesn’t just do the work for you. It shows you what you can do to make your article more efficient. It’s up to you to make it work. And that is what I love about this plug in. Even if I don’t have Scribe SEO to guide me along the way, I will know how to do it because it has shown me before. I’m learning how optimize and please both my readers and search engines. I love it!

That right there is worth the price alone. It’s like having someone show what your doing wrong and what you are doing right. Speaking of price, it’s fairly priced in my opinion for the value you get out of it. There are 3 different payment plans (monthly), each one suited for different needs. If you do affiliate work online, you could use this plugin to really rev up the SEO and bring traffic to your affiliate product. Ya, it’s not just for bloggers. It’s good for press releases, articles, web pages, basically anything that needs to be optimized for SEO.

I’ve rambled on long enough but I just wanted to give you an idea of how cool this is. Plus it has the name Brian Clark behind it so you know there is some expertise to the whole thing. Definitely a recommendation for those trying to sort out the search engine mystery.

I also tested Scribe SEO, and my thoughts are the same as yours. There are two reasons why I’m not still using it.

First. I had to pay using my credit card. If they had accepted PayPal, I would probably still be using it.

Second. I love writing. That’s what I do. When I tested the plugin, it was always something I had to change in order for the article to be perfect for the search engines. It didn’t take many minutes, but I had to do “a lot” of editing. The article didn’t come out the way I wanted it to come out.

The plugin was very easy to use, and it will probably be very helpful when it comes to seo. But so far, I’m managing my blogging without it :)

Jens. You aren’t the only one that wishes they took PayPal — I’ve seen a few others mention it (which means there must be billions of people who didn’t buy because of that, right?) Maybe Brian Clark will catch wind of this and add it as a payment option.

As for writing, I’m pretty much the opposite of you. I hate writing and only do it because I have to. I’ll take any SEO tips I can get. The only reason I write is because it works. If I don’t write, there is no reason for anyone to come to my sites, and nothing for the search engines to index.

Of course, here I am writing about how I hate writing. So I guess the one exception is all these damn blog comments I write. But that isn’t really writing, it’s more like socializing. And for a blog comment I just write any old thing that pops into my head with no regard for SEO. :-)

I don’t know about in any of your area has this but paypal has a feature where it will generate a credit card number for you. That way you can use it at places that don’t accept paypal directly. It works just as if you used paypal. It’s a plug in for your browser. I’m not sure if it’s just for firefox or not though.

I believe it’s under the Product and Services tab. Not only does it generate a card number (and the 3 digit number on the back) but it has an autofill for forms. That saves tons of time. I’ve been using this for awhile now and it’s been quite convenient.

I didn’t know about this feature. Thanks.

I have wanted the PayPal debit card, but unfortunately it’s not available in Norway.

I think content should always be written for the readers, but with SEO in mind. I think too often people do it the other way around, thus ending up with stagnant content that nobody likes. We write for people not web crawlers! That being said it is important to keep keywords in mind, but not at the expense of the overall user experience. You post a lot of good information here, thanks for the read.

I agree, that’s pretty much how I do things now; I write for my readers and keep keywords in mind. Afterwards I will go back and tweak it a bit to make it more SEO friendly. That is actually what I have been using Scribe SEO for and it’s worked wonders so far. Thanks for the comment and the compliment too :) .
