8 How Phrases That Can Hold You Back

by Christopher D. Anderson on February 19, 2010

Sayings, or phrases, are a daily part of lives. They become part of our psyche and can even be words we live by. They can be used for comfort and dealing with situations. They are usually words of wisdom. Some are well known while others are not.

On our journey towards success you will hear all kinds of saying and tidbits of information. Why are these phrases, old and new, such an integral part of our life? It’s because they are short and catchy, easy to remember. And we can relate to them and as I said, they become part of our lives and memories. They also convey a lesson of some sort usually.

It’s for these reasons that they can even be a bad thing or hold us back. My own personal experience of growing up being satisfied with the easy way out and doing what I could with what I had, really stuck in my mind. It’s taken a lot of work to change myself to the way I want to be. Even now it gets difficult at times

But I digress a bit. The point is there some common sayings that are used quite a bit. Sometimes they can have a negative impact or can just be flat-out wrong. That has a lot to do with our perception of the phrases as well as how they were used when we learned them.

Instead of listing a bunch of phrases I’m going to do something a little different. Here are 8 phrases and saying that you probably have heard before and why they may not be entirely true or why they may hold you back from reaching certain goals in your life.

You Can’t Teach a Old Dog New Tricks
Basically it means that once someone is set in their ways, they can’t learn anymore. I have found this to be false. It may be true to a degree, but not always. A found someone a few months ago that just started in online marketing for the first time. He was in his 60’s or 70’s. How cool is that?

Beggars Can’t Be Choosers
While I agree that you should accept what is given to you, it can also relay the message to settle with what’s given to you. We have the power to get what we want too. Just make a goal and do what you need to do to make it work.

You Have to Spend Money To Make Money
The online world is proof of this being wrong at times. You can start a business online at minimal, if any, cost to you. But (there always is a “but” isn’t there) if you have the money to spend then you do have an advantage. You don’t have to spend it right away to make money though, it just takes a bit longer.

All Good Things Come To Those Who Wait
More or less a lesson about having patience. Which is great, but it can also be used for people that wait for things in their life to come to them. Personally I would rather take control of my life and make things work out the way it’s needed instead of waiting for it. Wouldn’t you?

A Bird in Hand is Worth Two in a Bush

Basically it means to keep what you have instead of risking losing it trying to get something else. I agree a little bit, I appreciate the things I have, but there other parts of my life I would rather make better. If I am to become a better person I’m going to have to take a risk of some sort. You can’t grow you and your business without taking a small risk in the process.

Ignorance is Bliss
This depends on who you are. This works for some people but for someone that has a drive and motivation to get more out of life won’t work with this one. In my thirst for knowledge, I’ll take the possible consequences of knowing rather then not know at all.

Money is the Root of All Evil
Again, it’s a matter of perspective. I want to make money so that I can support and provide for my family. And so I can live a little more extravagant life. It’s not about the money itself but what I can use it for. If rocks were the current currency then I guess I would want more rocks. Greed on the other hand could be the root of evil though.

You Scratch My Back and I’ll Scratch Yours
I tend to give to people without thinking of myself. If it comes back and they do scratch my back then that would be awesome. If not, oh well. Basically I think it’s better to give without expecting then to give and expect something back automatically. I’m content with just scratching your back.

Chris,

Good on you for taking these head on. Truly, it is a perspective thing and if someone was looking for an easy excuse for any number of maladies they could pull one of these from the bins.

I appreciate the wisdom here.

Yup, it’s easy to use something else instead of facing the problem. You might not even be aware of it.

Hi Chris,

Keith here from Internet Tunnel and Bloggers Monthly.

Great post and addressing a fundamental flaw in most people who start out working online but are held back by their thinking.

Here is a good poem I read somewhere..I think it is by Kristone:

If You Think You’re Beaten

If you think you’re beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win, but think you can’t,
It’s almost for sure, you won’t.

If you think you’re losing, you’ve lost.
For out in the world we find -
Success begins with a person’s will,
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are,
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You have to stay with it,
In order to win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go,
To the one with the better plan.
For more often than not, you will win,
If only you think you can.

Thanks Keith for the awesome poem. It’s pretty wild that the biggest obstacle is sometimes yourself. Good stuff!

Chris, I was able to do some successful self-re framing so the money quote became “Lack of money is the root of much evil.”

One I have to watch for which isn’t exactly a saying, but it’s “I’m too old… ”

Thanks for the reminder.

Nice way to turn that around, I like that. And I don’t believe for a minute that you can be too old unless you settle into that frame of mind.
