The Difference Between a Mentor and Being Self Taught

by Christopher D. Anderson on January 13, 2010

Do you have a mentor yet in your field of business? Someone that has been around for awhile that is doing what you are aiming for? Getting a mentor is one of the best things you can do for you and your business. It will take you leaps and bounds towards success.

You see, there is an overwhelming amount of information about making money online. Tons of it! Almost too much of it at times. Half of it is probably not very good. But it’s out there. Whether you pay for it or not, there is an ebook, report, video, or blog somewhere out there to help you learn what you need to learn.

You can surely reach success by reading and learning how to do everything yourself. I love this information myself as I have read a lot of it. I’ve taught myself a lot over time thanks to people sharing and selling this information.

But I have recently discovered why having a mentor or teacher is so powerful. If you have been in marketing for any amount of time, I’m sure you have heard that getting a mentor is a good idea. It is and here’s why:

Guidance.

While you can reach success by teaching yourself, a mentor will give you that information and guide you towards the right way of using it. You see there is always room for improvement what you learn. The trick is figuring out where your messing up. A lot of information leaves out the little details like that. So that leaves you wondering why your tactics aren’t working.

That’s where a mentor comes in. If you are missing a step or doing something wrong, a mentor is someone that will notice and see what your doing wrong. And they will let you know. You see how that works? Instead of floundering around trying to figure it out you’ll know right away. Which will save you much needed time and effort.

You should still be doing things for yourself, as that’s the best way to learn, but having a mentor around to give you guidance and wisdom from their own experience will benefit you more than you realize.

So how do you find a mentor? If you haven’t already, start networking. This is something you could be doing for your business anyways. Eventually you will run into someone that is willing to take you under their wing. I suppose you could go out and actively look for one, but it doesn’t quite seem the same. Just keep an eye out.

Having a mentor will make you reach success much faster.
