Rules Are Meant To Be Broken

by Christopher D. Anderson on January 27, 2010

The world wouldn’t be where it is today if people didn’t break the rules. I’m not talking about breaking rules such as stealing or vandalism. Nothing illegal. I’m talking about the people that helped society and the way people look at things evolve. These are people that tried things that weren’t entirely accepted at the time.

These are all people that effected and changed things. They can have a great, lasting effect such as Einstein or Edison (plus many more!). Then there are people that effect society or certain parts of society. Bill Gates revolutionized computers at home. James Cameron has now created two of the top selling movies ever. I could go on.

These are people that have revolutionized different aspects of life as we know it. There are names in the marketing world that are well known for changing how we use marketing. Mike Dillard, Seth Godin and Chris Brogan come to mind. They are leading the pack with social media and attraction marketing. You could find all kinds of people that have changed the course of marketing.

But it doesn’t mean you have to be a big name guru to change things either. The point is this: Are you going to follow the rules that have been laid out so far? You can still make a living, no doubt about that. But think of what can be accomplished if you step outside that comfort zone, break some of those rules, and create something different. Something that may change the way people market.

I mean, you have probably already pushed your comfort zone by stepping outside of the typical 9 to 5 job. So why not go even further and try to revolutionize things? Surprise people and take things a step further. Don’t worry about everyone saying you should do it this way. Ya, that old way may work but this new way could be even better. This new way could really improve on things. It could also change the marketing world as we know it.

What do you think? Are you going to follow the same path as everyone else? Or will you be bold and step out of line? Break the rules and do something different. Be a rebel and create a revolution.
