What Makes Sales? Good Marketing or Good Products?

by Christopher D. Anderson on December 16, 2009

Obviously both although it usually doesn’t happen that way. I wanted to explain a bit as to why that combination can make killer sales. Good marketing can sell a mediocre product. And it is possible to make some decent money with just a good product. But it’s when you combine them it makes a huge difference.

Good Marketing

Marketing, in a simple sense, is getting a product in front of people. Spreading the word, finding opportunities to show the product. Getting the product (or service) out there. This is how people find out about your product and how they know about it.

Obviously there is a little more to it than that, such as how good the copy is, but let’s just say the whole setup is good. Along with some JV and affiliate programs, your marketing campaign will be top notch. With this kind of marketing power you could easily sell a mediocre product or service.

Big companies do it all the time. They come out with a new product and put up a bunch of commercials or informercials. The product may just be “allright” but they still sold well because of good marketing.

Good Products

There are tons of products out there. All this content is everywhere. A lot is free, some you have to buy. Either way, there is not shortage of products.

Unfortunately, a good portion of these are not that great. Some of it is pretty good. And then there are some products that really stand out in quality. These are the bang for your buck products. You get more than your use out of them and feel satisfied with your purchase.

These products, that outshine the rest, don’t always need good marketing. These are the products that market themselves to a degree. They go viral. Word spreads and they become the next big thing. People can’t wait to get it and dig into it.

Even with just a touch of marketing, these are the big bread winners.

Good Marketing and Good Products

So what do you think is going to happen when you put these two together? Let’s say you have created this monster ebook and it’s ready to sell. It turned out very well. It’s full of useful content and you gave it a fair enough price.

This is something you took your time on and it has a lot of value. And your ready to show the world and help people out with your useful information.

You came up with a great marketing campaign. Ads, emails, the works. You have contacted your JV partners and setup an affiliate program. Everything is coming together so well!

What do you think is going to happen when launch day comes? Your marketing is going to put the product out and make it known. Emails will be sent out, ads will be posted.

Word of mouth will be spread.

Your great product is what created that last element there: word of mouth. When people are very happy with a product, it’s going to be remembered and they are going to want to tell everyone else about it.

So not only did you make some good money with your marketing campaign, now your great product is going to start selling itself. It will go viral. Do you see why this works so well?

Now obviously this is a very simplified hypothetical process. There are many more elements that effect the situation. But I just wanted to go over the fact that building a good product and good marketing campaign will take you leaps and bounds.

Most of the time it’s one or the other. Every once in a while everything goes right and you achieve both. And things become huge. Just a little something to think about.
