Shut Your Mouth and Listen

Some peo­ple have the idea that you need to talk a lot and get every­thing out about your prod­uct to make sales. It works to a degree. But there’s some­thing you can do that will be much more effec­tive mar­ket­ing. Stop talk­ing and listen.

As mar­keters we solve prob­lems. Not all prob­lems obvi­ously but cer­tain prob­lems. Whether it’s help­ing oth­ers bring in more leads or teach­ing oth­ers how mar­ket or what­ever, your prod­uct solves a prob­lem. That is a big rea­son why peo­ple buy, to help them fig­ure things out and learn.

So when you start a con­ver­sa­tion with some­one let them do all the talk­ing. Ask ques­tions when needed, but let them tell you their story. Keep the con­ver­sa­tion going. Let them tell you their prob­lems. If they have a prob­lem, you may have a solu­tion (i.e. your free ebook, your product).

Of course be sin­cere. Actu­ally lis­ten. Don’t just wait for the right oppor­tu­nity. Do seize that moment, but keep lis­ten­ing. This will cre­ate trust with them and give you more opportunities.

So remem­ber, lis­ten to peo­ple. You might be amazed at what you find. And the oppor­tu­ni­ties you will discover.

I truly believe peo­ple need to lis­ten more, and I actu­ally blogged about this recently. I was in a sit­u­a­tion where some­one was talk­ing about get­ting started online. I could have told them so much and given so much advice, but instead they chose to talk talk talk and at the end of it I just thought, if they don’t want to lis­ten then that’s their loss. To be able to lis­ten is such a great skill!

Yup, you got it. I see peo­ple do it all the time. I think they would be much bet­ter at sales if they just stopped talk­ing for a min.
