Everyone should have a presence online. Especially now with social networking being the big thing. Facebook, myspace, linkedin, the list goes on and on. I had someone ask if you should have a separate account for your personal online presence and your business presence. Here are my thoughts on it.
I think it’s a pretty good idea to keep the two separate. And it has nothing to do with hiding anything from anyone. It’s just easier to keep track of everything. I use my personal profiles to keep in touch and interact with my friends and family.
With my business side, I get a lot of emails and connections and everything else. It makes it harder to find what you need when you have to sort through that, let alone with both of them together.
Plus I figure my family and friends are not interested in my marketing tactics and blog posts. It’s just the wrong audience. And there is no point in trying to teach something to someone that isn’t interested.
Same goes for email. As marketers we all get tons of emails in our inbox daily. And, as before, sorting through all that is consuming enough as it is without the added work of finding emails from my friends.
So in short, yes I think it’s a good idea to keep things separate. Simply for organization. It doesn’t mean people can’t learn about who you are personally, it just makes things a bit easier to sort out.

There are other reasons for keeping your business and personal presence separate. Do you have any other reasons?

I agree with you, but I also know that my family and friends do not connect with me via Twitter. They are a bit behind in times and don’t use those apps. As for facebook, I’m not using it for personal or business purposes as I have a thing against such sites. I don’t want to mention why, but I just don’t use it at all.
For others, they must do their best to separate the two (personal and business) as many would not bother reading your posts anyway.

It’s only been recently that my family has joined on these social sites. Not too much, but they are there.
It’s interesting to see someone not use sites like FB. Using those sites seems to be the big “thing” right now. Very cool.

I do try to keep personal and business separate — I just don’t want to use my personal Facebook account for business, it kind of takes the fun away from it! And I have loads of different email folders to separate everything our. You’re right that it really is necessary — things tend to get quite cluttered up otherwise!

You do have a point there. It’s easier to separate the two when they are.. well… separate. I actually have different email accounts, but folders work just as well. Folders are wonderful for organizing email in general.

While I do have different profiles on some social networks and I think it can be a good idea to keep it separate I want to bring up a point. Separate is ok but they must all be YOU! The REAL YOU! Nobody wants to follow someone they can tell is not real.
Take Chris for example. I can tell with out a shadow of a doubt even though we have never met in person that he is REAL even though I only network with him through his Networking sites.

You make a great point Ethan. Just because it’s separate doesn’t mean you don’t have to be real. Most people can see right through that anyways.
