How Working In A Factory Has Helped Develop My Business

by Christopher D. Anderson on November 25, 2009

It’s almost Thanksgiving here, so I thought it would be a good time to think about what I’m thankful for. Things that have helped me develop and learn the skills I need to make a living online. I find that you learn a lot from the most unexpected sources. One of those sources, for me, has been from working in a factory.

It doesn’t seem like working in a factory can give you lessons for life and working online. And while what I have done working a factory doesn’t directly relate to running and online business and marketing, I have taken a few things from that do relate.

Organization — At this factory there are all kinds of different jobs with different parts and different ways of doing things. The point is to run the machine and keep up with each cycle. The machine makes the parts, you do what you need to do to each part, then put them in a container for their next destination.

This would be done over and over till the day was done. Some jobs are harder then others, and that is where I learned how to stay organized. There were different tools to use and labels to put on the containers. Paperwork to keep track of your progress throughout the day. All this while making sure you catch the next cycle of the machine.

If you weren’t organized, it wouldn’t be difficult to fall behind. I learned a lot of little tricks and shortcuts that made the job much easier. Both on my own and from other people. I brought this skill over to my work online and have a tendency to keep things organized so that it runs smoothly.

Routines — Working every day at a factory and doing the same thing all day long helped me learn how to deal with routines. You had to get used to doing the same thing over and over all day long (sometimes over several days at a time). While it was very monotonous and boring at times I developed a lot more patience and perseverance.

Making money online, just like running a regular business, takes time to develop and grow. It takes a lot of working on the same thing for awhile to get things moving. There are certain tasks that must be done every day. Working in a factory and doing the same thing all day long, taught me a lot of patience in that respect. I know it will pay off eventually so I keep at it.

Motivation — If working in a factory, doing the same thing all day, sounds boring, it is. After awhile you can pretty much do things in your sleep if you wanted to. Simply from the fact that your so used to doing it, you don’t even have to think about it.

But in a roundabout way, I’m thankful for that too. Personally I can’t stand the idea of doing that everyday for the rest of my life. Especially with a cap on my pay that, quite frankly, is too low for my growing family. I also knew that I wanted to make something of myself. And that was never going to happen in a factory.

So, in a way, it was and still is a motivator for me to make a living by other means. To make something great of myself. Not working in a factory all my life.

These are the big things I’ve learned and developed from working in a factory. And I must say, some people like manual labor, but I don’t personally. It’s just not my thing. I’m a dreamer and wish for big things in my life.

With all due respect to people that stick with a typical job, it’s just something I don’t want to do myself. Not my whole life. I’m just amazed that some of the people working there have been at that place all their lives practically. That’s just crazy to me.

So in celebration of Thanksgiving, I want to thank my time working in a factory. Although it’s not very similar to working online and marketing, I’ve learned some things that I can use for my online ventures and achieving my dreams.

You would be surprised what you can learn from things that don’t seem to relate to working online. What have you learned from things that seem to have nothing to do with marketing?
