As I mentioned in my last post, it’s important to create groups of people from Twitter that you want to keep an eye on. It’s near impossible to keep track of everything on twitter alone, especially with a mass following. Creating groups is a great way to keep track of tweets that are important to you.
Today I’m going to show you how to create these groups in Tweetdeck. It’s pretty simple once you know how.
Open up your Tweetdeck and look at the upper left corner. You will see icons for writing your tweets, search, tweetdeck directory as well as icons with the twitter, facebook, and myspace buttons. It’s the twitter button here that we are interested in.
When you click on that a little box pops up. It shows a bunch of small icons at the top and below it will list any saved searches you have as well as groups when you create them. The icons do several different things and if you hover over them it will tell you what they are. But for now we are just concerned with the group button. Which is close to the middle.
Clicking on the group button changes the box to where you can create a new group. Below that is a list of people your are following.
Adding a new group will add a new column in your tweetdeck. Whenever you add people to this group, their tweets will show up in your newly created column. Let’s go ahead and create a group.
Type in a name for your group. It can be anything you want. Just make it something easy to remember or something related to the particular tweeters you have in mind to add to it. For the sake of this post we will call it “important tweets”.
Now we will add some people to the group. Remember that right below this is your complete list of people you are following. You can do one of two things. You can scroll through the list and pick out the people you would like to add. Or if you know who you want to add, you can use the filter box. Which is directly below the group name box. Just type in the name of the tweeter you want to add, and tweetdeck will sort through your list to find the person your looking for.
Whichever way you decide to do it is up to you. Either way, just tick the small box next to the name and they will be added to the group. When you have added who you want click “save group” at the bottom of the menu. You now have a new column in tweetdeck and a new group.
Now whenever people that you added to this particular group make tweets, they will show up in this column. This makes keeping track of tweets that are important to you easy to find. Otherwise you would be looking through the sea of tweets from all your friends.
Your new column works just like all the others as well. You can still hover over their pic and retweet or respond as you please.
One last thing: Of course your going to want to add more people to your group later on as your following grows (or take people off, gasp!). And it’s very easy to do. All you have to do is click on the group name at the top of your column. A box will pop up, it will look just like the one you used to create your group.
Just as before, you can scroll through the list, or use the filter box and search for particular people. Just tick the box next to their name to add them or untick it to take them off the group. Afterwards hit “save group” at the bottom and your group column will update.
I hope this helps, I’ll be back soon with a quick go over of Hootsuite. Which is essentially the same as tweetdeck except that it is used in the browser instead. Which is handy when your on a different computer.
In the meantime, I’ll mess around with the Twitter List and come back to you with that one. I like it so far but we shall see.
