When it comes to marketing and running a business there are a lot of regularly done tasks that you do to run it. And while marketing can be fun and very satisfying there are some tasks that aren’t what you might call fun but are essential.
For example I’m not big on bookkeeping. It just doesn’t appeal to me that much. But it’s essential to making my business running smoothly. I need to keep track of everything to avoid problems in the future. So it’s something I have to do even if I don’t entirely enjoy it. And until I can outsource that particular task to someone else, I’m going to have to do it myself.
Everyone has some task that they don’t really enjoy but is really needed. So make it a habit. Become an addict.
They say it takes 21 days to form (or break) a habit. And that’s what you want to do. Make some personal habits for every task you do. Eventually it will come naturally to you after doing it for so long on a regular basis.
Here are a few tips to help form a habit:
- Schedule a certain amount of time for this task. Whether it’s every day or once a week, whatever. Pick an amount of time to do it in and stick with it.
- Make sure you use this time only for that particular task. Nothing else.
- Make the task a good thing by giving yourself something afterwards. When you get it done, do something for yourself. Give yourself a “treat”, whatever that may be.
- Remind yourself why you need to do this task. Why is it good for you or your business?
- Look at the result of your hard work. Check out what doing this task has accomplished.
Of course forming a habit is a personal thing. And your going to have to find what motivates you to do these tasks. Find out what your own personal reward would be and apply that to the tasks you don’t really feel like doing. Make these tasks something good and do them on a regular schedule no matter what.
Eventually you will form a habit and become a marketing addict. Eventually you won’t have to struggle to do these tasks and you’ll find yourself doing it naturally.
Things become easier the more you do them.
