Are You Social Media Bot?

by Christopher D. Anderson on October 23, 2009

In the race to get as many followers as possible on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, it’s easy to forget to actually be social. When you add people do you send them a message to let them know a little about you? Or to introduce yourself?

I’ve said it before but social media sites are about networking. And the more human you are the easier it is to connect and create trust. I’m just as guilty as a lot of people for just adding people and not talking to them. Granted you obviously can’t talk to everyone (imagine if you could!) but I have found you get a much better response when you add someone if you include a little message.

It starts a conversation. And that’s a great thing. It’s networking. It creates trust when you begin to know someone. People buy from other people they know, not just some random stranger off the street.

So, give it a try it next time your are adding to your growing friends list. The more human you are the more of a response you can get. Obviously this won’t work with everyone, but you would be surprised how effective it is to remember there is another person on the other end with feelings and needs. And as marketers it’s our job to help with those needs.
