People don’t read books as much as they used to. There are still a lot of people that read on a regular basis, but for the most part there isn’t near as many that used to. I think it has a lot to do with society as it is today. It seems like everyone is in a hurry. They apparently don’t have time to read. And with the internet so prevalent nowadays, it seems like everyone is constantly on the go.
I’m all for reading an ebook or report on the computer. Or even reading one of many blogs that I’m subscribed to. The internet is full of bite sized chunks of information. I love information and these are awesome ways to get it. But it’s still not quite the same thing as reading an actual physical book. It’s a much different experience and I think it’s something everyone should indulge in, at least every once in a while.
Here are 8 reasons you should be reading books too:
1. Easier on the eyes: Reading on a bright computer screen is hard on the eyes. Trying to read on a screen for a period of time will wear your eyes out much faster then reading from pages. Even if you have a very nice big screen, you will still be working your eyes much harder then if you would with a book.
2. It’s relaxing: Sitting down and curling up with a book is a great way to relax and unwind. It’s one of my favorite things to do at the end of the night. I can learn and relax at the same time. That’s hard to do digitally, even with a laptop.
3. It can be an escape: We all work hard and it’s nice to take a break from it all. Books can do that for you. Maybe next time instead of relaxing to a book about your business, pick up you favorite fiction book and dive into it. It’s a great way to get away from things and when you are done your mind will feel refreshed. You’ll be more then ready to take on the “real world” afterwards.
4. They help you learn: Just like other forms of reading, books are a great way to learn. And they cover subjects just as extensively as their digital counterparts. So there isn’t any excuse not to learn from a physical book as well. If I have the choice between a physical book and a digital ebook, I’ll take the physical one without a doubt. If your wanting to read on how to progress yourself or your business, it’s still possible without staring at the screen.
5. Make yourself more valuable: I talk about this in my article on ezinearticles about knowledge. The more you learn about your field of marketing and business, the more valuable you are to others. And here’s why…
6. You become more able to teach others: Reading is a great way to learn and it enables you to teach and pass on that knowledge to others. That is what most of online marketing consists of, information. The more information we can pass on, the more valuable we are to others.
7. It makes you stop and slow down: As busy as everyone is these days, I think it’s important to stop and look around once in a while. In a way reading does this for you. More specifically when you stop and read an actual book. I think we need to slow down every once in awhile and smell the roses. It’s healthy for us all.
8. It’s an enjoyable experience: This may just be a personal thing, but I enjoy having a physical book. The feel and smell (you don’t smell books? Maybe I’m just weird.) is a unique experience on it’s own. Being able to flip pages is something you can’t do on the computer.
Now everyone is different. Books are as much of a personal choice as anything else. But I think it’s something we should use at least once in awhile. I’m not saying you need to read a real book all the time. Heck, I spend quite a bit of my reading time on the computer too. I think it’s kind of important though. What do you think?
