Why Using Video or Audio Creates Credibility and Trust

by Christopher D. Anderson on September 2, 2009

As a writer, I love the written word (or in the case nowadays, the typed word). And it’s a great way to give information to others and create products. It builds credibility for you as an expert and someone that can help others. It’s a great way to get a message across.

But there are other ways that are a bit more efficient in creating credibility and trust. And that is video and audio.

Watching a video makes the presenter much real. You can see them and watch they way they move. It’s close to actually talking to someone. And in some cases you

    can

talk to someone over video.

It’s easier to trust someone when you actually see or hear the people behind the words. Not that it can’t be done with writing. It’s just seems that people connect a little faster when they can see and hear the other person.

It’s probably some kind of human nature thing. We are built to be social, and we always will be. When you are talking to someone face to face, it’s easy to get a feel for the person and decide whether they are someone to trust or not.

You can see their body language and hear their voice. You can see their reactions and their personality. This is why video and audio work. They are the next best thing for getting to know someone from a distance.

As I said, it’s not that you can’t do this with writing, but I think in a way it might take longer. It takes longer for people to soak in your personality. It also takes a few more times to soak in the information and find out how helpful it is.

But there is no cut and dry formula. You still have to create great content no matter what form you present it in. A well written, personal article can build trust and credibility just as fast as a video in some cases. And on the other side, a video can take awhile to build it.

And really it all depends on you and what you are good at. If your uncomfortable in front of the camera, it won’t be as effective. People can see that.

And again, if you don’t write well, that won’t be as effective either. I’m good at writing. And although I may dabble in making videos at some point, it still won’t be as effective for me. Until I get good at it, but even then.

So although making a great video or audio is a quick way to build credibility, it’s not for everyone. Some things just work better for some people.

With that said, I think it’s a good idea to have different forms of content anyways. And you can always get better at the things your not good at. It just takes practice.

What other forms of content have you done and which works better for you and why?

Loved this one Chris! Personally I love video! Its easier for me to communicate because I more of a free form thinker. Plus I think it is the best possible way to get people to see who you really are and build rapport. Disclaimer if you aren’t a good person people will pick up on it faster on video! So be a good person and do the right things. Video builds report. Plus my personal feeling is people are lazy. They are more likely to click play than to read two pages. I might have to do a post on this as well. Great subject!
