You Have Done a Great Job. Don’t Forget to Reward Yourself

by Christopher D. Anderson on July 24, 2009

Everyday as business people we are faced with things to do and problems to deal with everyday. And we all have (or should have) our daily plan. Stuff that we do each day consistently. Then there is our to do list.

Stuff that we work on a bit at a time. Long term projects or just things that we set for a certain date that needs done. To say the least, there is always something to do. And some days are much more productive then others.

But when do you take time for you? Do you forget to do something for you? I know I have. And there’s something you can do about that. Plus it helps with self motivation.

Have you had a particularly productive day?

- You did everything on your list.

- You attended that very informative webinar

- You put those finishing touches on that report

- You even had time to read some of that ebook you have been meaning to get to.

- And you brought in some good recruits for the day.

Everyone’s “productive” day is a bit different, but the point is this: When you have really good days and you pull ahead a bit and get a lot done, there is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself. What’s your reward? Anything you want, it’s extremely personal to each person.

Maybe go out and get that ice cream you’ve been thinking about. Go get yourself a massage. Even unplug for a little bit and go out for a walk. A a simple pat on the back could work “I did awesome today!”.

Not only does this help you keep momentum going, it also motivates you to try just as hard the next day. Or work as hard on the next project. Working for ourselves makes it easy to forget about ourselves. When you work for someone else, they usually reward you. But working from home takes some self discipline. And not just for running your business.

So don’t be afraid to give yourself a confidence boost and pat yourself on the back. When Stephen King worked on writing a new book. He set a cigarette out (he quit at some point a long time ago, this is more of a ritual now). Then he would hammer out the book. Editing and revising. Everything. After a long while he would finally be done. And then he would finally smoke that cigarette.

A work of passion or not, rewarding yourself helps you stay motivated, boosts your confidence, and heck, even rubs your ego a bit too. Just don’t be afraid to acknowledge your accomplishments. It can be very rewarding.
