I’m sure you all have heard about Micheal Jackson story by now (r.i.p.). And even though there was a lot of controversy in his life, he was still a damn good artist. He could sing and dance like no other. For that reason alone he was looked up to by millions of people.
So, what does he have to do with marketing? I’ve brought this up before about good bands and artists being like marketing leaders. They give people something that they enjoy or is of use to them. And they do it very well!
I went to a concert last year and we were all waiting for the band to come out. Of course everyone would chant and cheer once in awhile to get them to come out. There were stage hands setting up the equipment and whatnot. At one point one of them came out and took a cover off of a poster. It had a picture that was for the band. The crowd cheered almost as if the band came out themselves. I thought it was kind of funny but it made me think too.
These people are going crazy, waiting to see a band that they love and adore. And it reminded me of how some marketing leaders are. People hang on their every whim to see what new info or product they are coming out with. All these leaders have to do is send out a simple email and people clamor over it, trying to get the product and find out about the newest thing.
So bands and artists are the same way, they just have a different products. Their music. But more than that, their image. What they represent to millions of people. And of course their talent.
Micheal Jackson started in music when he was just a kid. And even then he had a talent for singing and dancing. As he got older and his career progressed, he was always coming out with something new. And I think part of the attraction was “what will he do next?”.
Madonna is the same way, always changing her looks and style. But no matter what, it was still Madonna. Causing controversy in her wake. And even more so as she moved.
These are just two examples, as there are many great artists out there. But the point is this, they did things that got the public’s attention (be it good or bad). They brand themselves and everyone loved it! They have a following. A very devoted following. a.k.a. “Attraction Marketing”
Now I’m sure they weren’t always like that. And just like you and me they had to work hard to get where they are in their career. They took what they were good at and ran with it. And never stopped. Consistency! Persistance!
Now take you and your business, pick what you are good at and go with it. Use your talents. Learn your skills. Make them better and always evolve them. And don’t stop!
We all can succeed!
~Chris
