Really cool article from a very informative and cool guy from Betternetworker.

Ok…You caught me Al Gore is not paying attention to this article or me for that matter.  But what I want to share with you is the insights I have found on my quest to profit from Social Media.

What is social media?  Social media most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio in a community.  Examples of social media are Facebook, Twitter, My Space, and Youtube.  These are the most popular and common examples.  However, there are many other communities as this on the Internet.

How do you leverage these communities to build your network marketing business?

Many network marketers join these sites to start pitching their opportunity/product/services right away.  They going direct about how great there widget is.  How it is the best thing since slice bread.  You know the story.  If you have been involved with social media for any period of time you have ran into some buddy like this!

Do NOT do this!

The first thing you need to know about social media is about people.  The average person is truly BORED out of their mind.  They watch 4 to 5 hours a television a day, they are overweight, and generally speaking not reaching their goals.   People want to be friends with people who have high value.  If you hang out with those people, you become higher value by association.

Tip #1: The power of social media comes from your personal following.  Your goal should be to build a group of people who are similar and like-minded to you.

Knowing most people are bored out of their mind, you need to NOT BE BORING!  Make yourself an interesting person.  Reading interesting books.  Do interesting things.  Eat interesting foods.  A perfect example of being interesting is Al Gore.  He took the truly controversial of global warming and capitalized on it.  If you have ever watched his presentation, he made it very interesting!

Tip #2:  You need to connect with people in your niche.  If you are in network marketing search out other people in network marketing to become friends!  Seems common sense, but with 20 million users it seems easy just to add friends at random to your community.

How do you translate building a community into dollars?  This is the part of building a following.  When people know and trust you they will want to do business with you!  For every 10 status updates or message, you can have one message about your business.

Tip #3: Sharing How To information is always more effective than selling them the “who, what, when, where, and why” of your company.

Al Gore and I might not see eye to eye on global warming.  But we both agree on the power of building a community around a common message.
